How Hospices Have Decreased Turnover to 5% and Attract Top Talent
Andrew Reed, Systems Analyst/CPA, CEO & Chief Teaching Officer, Multi-View, Inc.

There are hospices where turnover is around 5% year after year... and are in growth mode simultaneously. Turnover or loss of talent is perhaps the #1 destroyer of value in an organization. Training costs are enormous and an organization with anything over 20% has little claim to quality. Therefore, an organization needs to 1) Attract and 2) Retain the most talented people it can. It does an organization little good to train people only to have them leave. It is no accident that some hospices have such low turnover and have massively talented people that can implement innovations at a pace that leaves competitors in the dust. Not only is the turnover rate excellent, virtually all other measures such as profitability (16% and higher) and quality are as high as they can practically go. Everything comes from the quality of an organization’s focus on people systems.

...and What Does It Mean for Home Care & Hospice?

Tina M. Marrelli, MSN, MA, RN, FAAN, President,  Marrelli and Associates, Inc./Innovative Caregiving Solutions

This foundational presentation lays the groundwork for the recognition of family and friend caregivers as having increasing value in the health care system. In home care and hospice, we have historically relied on these members of the health care team before and between visits and care. The complexity of care and the aging of the population and their caregivers creates challenges for home care, hospice and palliative care clinicians and organizations.  How do we best support the patient and their family caregivers to help organizations and patients and their caregivers meet desired outcomes and improve the patient/family experience? A person-centered scenario will be presented to integrate presented concepts of holistic and compassionate care.

Recent CMS changes have provided more leeway to healthcare organizations to provide telehealth and remote patient monitoring services to palliative and hospice patients. These services can help providers create a care continuum for such patients, but what success has been shown thus far? How are successful palliative and hospice programs utilizing telehealth? How can a program achieve a return on their investment? Learn from organizations that have developed best practices and innovative care models for telehealth programs in hospice and palliative care. Organizations that have adopted telehealth are leveraging the technology to reduce their total costs of care, skilled nursing visits, staff church rates, hospital readmission rates and ER utilization. This presentation will discuss how one organization was able to reduce their 30-day hospital readmission rates by 40% for palliative care patients, and the future of reimbursement for such services.

Many home health agencies are currently dealing with a staffing shortage and also anticipating a greater health workforce shortage in coming years.  Employee churn – which can lead to cancelled/rescheduled appointments and undermine an agency’s ability to take on new patients – can lead to a breakdown in the continuum of care, weaker overall outcomes, and an increased risk of readmissions. Implementing a virtual care platform can help a home health organization better utilize current staff while being able to provide better – meaning, more timely and higher quality – care to their patients. Instead of spending most of the day behind the wheel, nursing staff can increase their productivity by using the platform to engage patients in virtual visits and continue to provide frequent reminders about their medication, upcoming appointments, and overall well-being.
