Wound Care: Best Practices

Taking care of wounds in the home can be complex. The Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina is excited to be hosting an in-person wound care event presented by Monica Wilson, a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse from Duke Homecare & Hospice. This event will give you the opportunity to learn more about wound assessment, documentation, wound healing principles and wound types. You will also get the opportunity to see different supplies for various wound types. Home Health regulatory considerations will be reviewed and case studies presented to test your knowledge. The event’s overall focus is to help attendees gain knowledge to reduce wound complications, promote healing, and keep the patient at home. While this event is geared toward the non-wound certified homecare nurse, there is plenty of applicable content for the hospice nurse as well.

Monica Wilson MSN, APRN, GCNS-BC, CWON

Monica Wilson MSN, APRN, GCNS-BC, CWON has been an RN since 1987. After spending time in pediatrics and adult oncology, Monica landed in the homecare setting at Kaiser Permanente in California, covering RN caseloads for 10 years. Since a large segment of the homecare population are treated for wounds, this became an area of expertise, without really knowing it. In 2006, She completed her MSN and Clinical Nurse Specialist education, subsequently working as a CNS at the VA Medical Center in San Diego, as well as adjunct faculty in Point Loma Nazarene University’s nursing program. In 2014,  she decided to make her passion for wound healing the last chapter of her nursing career. Monica obtained her Certified Wound Ostomy Nurse education from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. She spent 3 years as a CWON in a hospital system, then moved to North Carolina in 2017 for a change of pace. A Wound/Ostomy Nurse Specialist position at Duke Homecare was opened to her, which combined the best of all worlds. Healing wounds, helping patients live to their fullest with an ostomy, and educating nurses to do the same brings her great satisfaction!

Continuing Education:

This activity is eligible for 3.75 nurse contact hours.
The Association for Home & Hospice Care of North Carolina is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Confirmation: Prior to the in-person event, you will receive an email confirmation with all pertinent information relating to the class.

Registration: Registration begins at 9:30am, the workshop will begin promptly at 10:00am and conclude by 2:30pm.

Cancellation and Substitution Policy: Fees will be refunded, or invoices will be adjusted, only if written notice of cancellation is received by AHHC one week prior to the event. In the event of cancellation, AHHC will retain, or charge, 50% of the initial registration fee, per registrant, to cover administrative overhead. Once written cancellation is received, an AHHC staff member will review for approval. If your cancellation is approved, we will email back a signed and dated copy of the cancellation that your agency should retain on file in case of questions.
